Box Score 2 ANTHEM, Ariz. - Five innings of no-hit
pitching by Tom Zarosinski and timely hitting
throughout the lineup carried the George Fox University Bruins to a
12-1 win over the University of Redlands Bulldogs in their first
game of the day in the Arizona Desert Classic baseball tournament
Saturday here at Boulder Creek High School.
The Bruins suffered their first loss of the season in the second
game of the day, however, collecting 12 hits but stranding too many
runners in a 6-3 setback to the University of La Verne
Leopards.
Game 1: George Fox 12, Redlands 1
Zarosinki (1-0) took a no-hitter and shutout into the 6th inning
against the Bulldogs, who touched him for three hits and a run in
the 6th and one more hit in the 7th. The junior right-hander
finished with eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter in seven
frames. Kyle Albertson finished up with two innings of
shutout relief, fanning two.
“Tom allowed a couple of base runners in the 1st on two
errors but struck out three in the inning, then was 'lights
out' from the 2nd through the 5th,” noted George Fox
head coach Marty Hunter. “The lineup picked him up with
key hits when we got men on base; we only had 10 hits with four
walks and one hit batsman, but got the clutch hits when we needed
them.”
The Bruins scored twice in the 2nd, four times in the 4th, and
six times in the 5th. Matthew Zeller and Danny Clifford had
two hits each, while Zeller, Clay Mott, Zac Israel and Jalen Drath
each drove in two runs.
Game 2: La Verne 6, George Fox 3
The Bruins held a 2-1 lead going into the 5th before the
Leopards scored four times, all with two out, to pin the loss on
southpaw Sam Morland (0-1). Mott, Israel, and Zach Hegelmeyer
had two hits apiece for the Bruins.
“This was one of those games where we had chances to win
but didn't do the little things it takes at the right time to
win a close game,” admitted Hunter. “We'll
see how the team responds tomorrow against a Whitman College team
from our own conference that is playing very well down
here.”
NEXT: George Fox (2-1) concludes play in
the Arizona Desert Classic Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Standard
Time (12:30 p.m. Pacific) against the Whitman Missionaries, again
at Boulder Creek. The Bruins then return home for four
weekend games Friday-Sunday against Concordia University-Portland
and the College of Idaho, with two of the games being played at
Concordia on Friday and Sunday and two on Saturday at Morse Field
in Newberg.
