NEWBERG, Ore. – Wins in the Nos. 1 and 2
doubles got George Fox University off to a good start against
Pacific Lutheran University, but a clean sweep of the singles
matches enabled the visiting Lutes to take a 7-2 win over the
Bruins in Northwest Conference women's tennis action Friday
here at the GFU campus courts.
Alyssa Emoto and Krista Rey captured a hard-fought 8-6 win at
No. 1 doubles over the Lutes' Leah Newell and Samantha Lund,
and Ali Diehl and Megan Dahlberg doubled up Allison McClure and
Mariah Siemion 8-4 at No. 2. Emily Bower and Megan Beyers
gave the Lutes their only doubles win at No. 3 with an 8-1 victory
over Shelby Arnold and Jessica Moss.
The singles were all PLU, however, as the Lutes won each in
straight sets. It was Newell over Emoto 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1;
Lund over Rey 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2; Beyers over Dahlberg 6-1, 7-5 at
No. 3; Siemion over Diehl 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4; McClure over Arnold
6-1, 6-1 at No. 5; and Bower over Ilsa Teppo 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
George Fox slipped to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in the conference,
while Pacific Lutheran improved to 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the
league, continuing their fight for a berth in the four-team NWC
Tournament next Friday-Saturday, Apr. 25-26.
