BEAVERTON, Ore. – For the second match in
a row, the George Fox University Bruins got off to a good start by
winning the top two doubles, but the University of Puget Sound
Loggers recovered and swept the singles for a 7-2 win in the
Northwest Conference women's tennis season finale for both
teams Saturday here at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Club.
The match was moved from the GFU campus courts to the indoor
facilities at Tualatin Hills early Saturday due to a morning rain
shower that soaked the on-campus courts. George Fox ended its
season at 7-12 overall and 3-9 in the conference, finishing in a
tie with Willamette University for sixth in the league.
Puget Sound is now 8-5 overall and 7-5 in the conference,
currently in fifth. They can tie for fourth if Pacific
Lutheran University drops its final match at Lewis & Clark
College. However, the Loggers have nailed down the fourth
spot in the NWC Tournament based on the league's tennis
points system, but their opponent will depend upon the rest of
today's results and tiebreakers.
Alyssa Emoto and Krista Rey claimed an 8-5 victory over the
Loggers' Marissa Friedman and Logan Thompson at No. 1
doubles, and Ali Diehl and Megan Dahlberg squeezed out a 9-8 (7-4)
win over Malia Ford and Jenna Gerdsen at No. 2. The Loggers
picked up their only doubles win as Allison Embernate and Sarah
Nielsen downed the Bruins' Shelby Arnold and Jessica Moss 8-0
at No. 3.
Puget Sound then proceeded to take all six doubles matches in
straight sets, losing only 18 games the entire way. It was
Thompson over Emoto 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1; Friedman over Rey 6-2, 6-2
at No. 2; Gerdsen over Dahlberg 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3; Embernate over
Diehl 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; Nielsen over Arnold 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5; and
Alana Hopper over Ilsa Teppo 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
