NEWBERG, Ore. --- Four RBIs from catcher Andrew Reichenbach and a solid ensemble performance from the bullpen saw the Bruins lay low Lewis & Clark on Tuesday afternoon, 9-6. Reichenbach recorded his four RBIs on a 2-3 day at the plate, notching a pair of singles and a run scored.
The game will count as a non-conference win and the Bruins boost their overall record to 8-9.
Starting pitcher Michael Hirko was very effective in his four innings of work, allowing just two hits and a walk, holding the Pioneers scoreless.
The Bruins got to Lewis & Clark starter Aaron Landecker in the second. After Ansel Webster walked and Thran grounded a single into left, Reichenbach fittingly opened the scoring by lining a clean single to score Webster. Blake Christopher followed with a long sacrifice fly to bring in Thran, and after Kyle Esquerra walked Reichenbach slid in safely to score another when catcher Michael Kinkenon mishandled a throw. Kadyn Nannini, after reaching on a fielder's choice, pulled off a nifty piece of base running, drawing a throw and delaying the third out long enough for Esquerra to race home and give the Bruins an early 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, Nannini gave the Bruins another with a long sacrifice fly to center, deep enough to bring in Blake Christopher. Lewis & Clark, though, jumped on Bruin reliever Nick Auld, pushing across three runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of singles by Bradley Lezak and Kinkenon. Blake Stassi relieved Auld, but only after the Pioneers narrowed the score to 5-3.
The Bruins got two of those runs back in their half of the fifth, though, when Pioneers left fielder Ej Hand booted Reichenbach's ball, letting Thran and Zach Rapacz score to extend the lead, 7-3.
Lewis & Clark scored again in the sixth on an RBI double by Nick Lockwood, but the Bruins added two more in the seventh. Thran's long fly let Clay Mott score, and Reichenbach grabbed his fourth RBI by putting a ball through the right side to bring in Rapacz.
Trailing 9-4, the Pioneers managed two runs in the ninth, but the Bruins held on easily, seeing the game out for the 9-6 win.
Hirko's win improves his record to 2-0. They have a chance to reach an even .500 on Saturday, when they host Whitman for a doubleheader.
