A Monday Split

NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox completed its three game series against Whitman Monday afternoon, as the Bruins split the double-header against the Missionaries.

Game 1

Although Zach Rapacz's dramatic walk-off grand slam gave the Bruins the victory on Sundayagainst Whitman, another Rapacz home run was not quite enough on Monday, as Whitman scratched out three late runs to overcome the Bruins, 3-2. The white-hot Rapacz finished 2-4 with a home run and a single RBI. Riley McKean also had a multi-hit game, going 2-3 with a double. Reliever Michael Hirko took the loss for the Bruins despite throwing just a third of an inning.

Rapacz's solo shot came in the third to open the scoring, and the Bruins added another in the fourth, when Dunning's groundout was enough to bring in Ansel Webster from third.

Unlike the previous game, it was Whitman that rallied from behind. The Missionaries got one off of Bruins starter Sean Eberhardt in the fifth, when Adrian Vela's lined shot to left scored Jonny Chow. Eberhardt surrendered his chance at a win in the sixth; Braden Hussey's single brought in Joseph Zimmer to knot the game at two.

Reliever Michael Hirko entered in the seventh for George Fox, and after recording a flyout promptly put two runners on and was replaced by Nathan Higa. After Higa gave up a walk to load the bases, Peter Carmichael's grounder let Vela race home with that proved to be the winning run.

The Bruins had the tying run on second in the ninth, but reliever Henry Lin fanned Rapacz to end the game.

The Bruins drop to 9-10 with the loss as they enter the day's second game with Whitman.

Game 2

After dropping game one on Monday afternoon to Whitman's determined comeback, the Bruins made a statement in the doubleheader's nightcap, putting together an impeccable performance towards a 4-0 win. Brandon Wileman bagged his first roundtripper of the season, and starter Taylor Dunn had his best start of the year, scattering three hits throughout his complete-game shutout and striking out twelve.

The Bruins gave Dunn some leeway early on. Wileman led off the bottom of the first by depositing Jack Coppinger's offering over the outfield fence, and in the second Kyle Esquerra recorded certainly his strangest sacrifice fly. With Riley McKean on third, Esquerra towering popup carried first basemanTristan Cates far enough toward the outfield to allow McKean to race home.

In the fourth, the Bruins doubled their lead to 4-0. Three straight singles from McKean, Clay Mott, and Tyler Hamilton loaded the bases, and again Esquerra recorded two bizarre RBIs. Officially recorded as a fielder's choice, a costly error by catcher Maclean Harned let McKean and Mott score.

Working with a four-run cushion, Dunn was masterful, keeping the Missionaries off-balance at the plate all game. Each of the three hits Dunn allowed were singles.

Wileman finished 2-5 with an RBI and a run, in addition to his leadoff homer. McKean and Mott both went 2-3, and Esquerra had three RBIs despite going 0-2.

Whitman stands at 3-12 after the day's doubleheader. The Bruins even out at 10-10 with the victory. They travel to Corban on Wednesday for a single game.
