ORANGE, Calif. --- The Bruins never quite figured out starter Matt Smith on Friday afternoon, managing just five hits and a single run off of Chapman's ace, who struck out ten. For the Bruins, Tom Zarosinski had a solid but inconsistent start, though reliever Blake Stassi was excellent in his four innings of shutout relief.
Offensively, Zach Rapacz and Andrew Reichenbach both finished 2-4 and tagged Smith for a double. Reichenbach had the Bruins' only RBI, knocking in Jacob Woehler with a single through the middle in the seventh.
Chapman, on the other hand, got to Zarosinski early. Three-hitter Gavin Blodgett singled, stole second with a good slide, and got a good two-out jump to score on Tyler Cook's single. In the second, Chapman added two more. With two men on, John Wiehe's grounder was enough to bring in one, and Tim Alhanati's bunt single scored another.
Chapman made the score 4-0 in the third, when Jared Love singled love singled in David Basen.
George Fox had runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth, but AJ Valencia's well-hit ball was tracked down in left field.
In the seventh, the Bruins finally snapped Smith's shutout. Wohler worked a walk, swiped second, and scored on Reichenbach's grounded single.
The 4-1 final drops the Bruins to 10-12 on the season. They will have a chance at vengeance during tomorrow's doubleheader with Chapman.
