TACOMA, Wash. --- Mason Dunning's first home run of the season and a two-RBI triple from center fielder Kadyn Nannini were not quite enough for the Bruins on Sunday afternoon, as they fell to hosts Pacific Lutheran, 7-4. Despite a solid day offensively for the Bruins, Lutes cleanup hitter Landon Packard was better, homering and knocking in four RBIs.
Starter Taylor Dunn, who went four-and-two-thirds while giving up five runs and striking out five, took the loss for the Bruins. Both Tom Zarosinski and Blake Stassi were efficient in relief, allowing a run each.
Besides Dunning and Nannini, stalwart Zach Rapacz had a good day, recording a 1-3 performance with a run scored and a walk. Designated hitter Andrew Reichenbach went 1-4 and drove in a run.
The Bruins got on the board first in the fourth. With one out, Rapacz sliced a single into left and scored soon after on Reichenbach's sole hit, a long double to center. Unimpressed the Lutes broke out in the fifth with five runs. Connor Cantu started things off with a two-RBI single. After Collin Nilson whiffed for the second out, Packard drilled a double that plated two more. The next batter, Tyler Thompson, concluded the scoring with an RBI single to right.
Trailing 5-1, the Bruins made a game of it in the seventh. Nannini caught hold of a good pitch and clubbed it deep to left center, racing around for a two-RBI triple, reducing the deficit to 5-3.
Packard refused to entertain any George Fox comeback, though, leading off the next inning with a long home run. It was Packard again in the eighth, this time with a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-3.
The Bruins managed one run in the ninth on Dunning's long ball, but ultimately fell a little short.
George Fox stands at 12-16 with the loss. Their conference record, though, is over .500, at 8-7. The Bruins travel to Puget Sound for a three-game set on Friday.
