NEWBERG, Ore. --- Despite out-hitting Whitworth, 7-6, the Bruins faced a heartbreaking defeat on Sunday afternoon, losing on a walk-off error in the bottom of the ninth. Tom Zarosinski, despite not officially pitching a third of an inning and giving up no earned runs, took the unlucky loss to drop his record to 1-2 on the year.
Both starters pitched sparkling games. For the Bruins, Taylor Dunn scattered four hits over eight innings, his lone mistake coming on a long Joshua Davis home run in the first. The Bruins tagged Whitworth starter Spencer Ansett for seven hits but managed just a single run.
After Davis's solo shot in the first, Whitworth's other opportunity came in the second. A double from Joel Condreay and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out, but Dunn did well to escape the danger, inducing harmless fly outs from both Garrett Hughes and Specner Lookabill.
George Fox's run came in the third. Kadyn Nannini led off with a lined double to left-center and loped home easily on Zach Rapacz's clean single to right.
With both pitchers in top form, the teams exchanged zeroes until the bottom of the ninth. Zarosinski relieved Dunn and gave up a leadoff single to Davis. Pinch-hitter Paul Miller followed with another single to put runners on first and second. An error by catcher Ansel Webster loaded the bases with no outs for Whitworth, and a misplayed ball by third baseman Riley McKean let Davis race home with the winning run.
Rapacz and Clay Mott both recorded two hits for the Bruins.
The loss drops the Bruins to 7-9 overall, 5-4 in conference. They will look to rebound on Tuesday, when they host Lewis & Clark.
