TACOMA, Wash. --- Playing away at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday afternoon to open their Northwest Conference schedule, the Bruins lost a 2-0 match despite generally positive team play.
Recap:
Goalkeeper Murray Noble provided a highlight in the 39th minute, when he made a terrific save off Troy-Mikal Oliger's penalty kick. By and large, the match was rather nondescript; the Bruins just couldn't seem to find the final ball. The Lutes saw the majority of possession early on, but the Bruins carved out a few chances: Joab Logan lined a shot wide of the post, and Lutes keeper Mike Arguello made a quality save on a shot by Miguel Lopez. Soon after, a clever pass by Pacific Lutheran's Joel Frykholm found Diego Aceves, who blasted a shot beyond Noble to open the scoring.
The Bruins went into the halftime break down just a goal, thanks to Noble's heroics on the Lutes' spot kick. Little changed in the second half, unfortunately: the Bruins continued to find opportunities but failed to finish. Evan Cooney had a chance pulled down by Arguello, and Lopez came close again. As the Bruins poured forward in the game's final ten minutes, the Lutes managed to win another penalty kick, and this time Aceves sent Noble the wrong way and sealed the match, 2-0.
What Comes Next:
After Saturday, the Bruins stand at 3-4 on the year overall and 0-1 in the very young NWC season. They travel nearby to Puget Sound on Sunday with an eye at grabbing their first conference win.
