TUALATIN, Ore. --- The George Fox women's tennis team earned their first win of the 2016 season on Sunday, as the Bruins beat the Pirates of Whitworth, 5-4.
Recap:
Despite falling 2-1 after doubles, the Bruins were ready to rally in singles play and it all started after Catrina Kwong tied the match up after winning in straight sets at the No. 2 spot. Ellen Pearson then gave the Bruins their first lead of the match after beating Anabelle Burns, 6-2, 6-1.
The Pirates answered, though, and won at the No. 3 and No. 5 spot to retake the lead in the match, 4-3.
Sarah Tuemmler battled hard for the Bruins at the No. 1 spot and forced an extra set against Bella Hoyos. Tuemmler went on to win her match, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
With the match all squared at 4-4, all eyes turned to Ali Diehl at the No. 6 spot. Diehl went on to take the first set 6-4 and secured the Bruins' victory taking down Ashley Winslow 7-5 in the second set.
Top Performer:
Diehl was not only the decision maker for the Bruins, but she also went 2-0 on the day after her and Andrea Motley won at the No. 3 spot in doubles, 8-2.
What It Means:
With the win, the Bruins improve to 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Northwest Conference.
What Comes Next:
George Fox will head out to Pacific Lutheran on Feb. 28 to continue Northwest Conference play.
