TUSCON, Ariz. --- Five scoreless innings from starter Sam Morland and two RBIs from Connor Newell helped the Bruins top Concordia Wisconsin on Sunday, 5-3, to conclude their spring swing through Arizona.
Recap:
Morland was brutally effective, limiting Concordia Wisconsin to just two hits over his five-and-one-third innings, striking out eight to pick up his sixth win of the season. The Bruins found him some run support early on, breaking the zeroes in the third, when Clay Mott led off with a walk and Caylen Clardy promptly doubled him in.
The Bruins added a second run the next inning, when Kadyn Nannini ripped a leadoff double, and Newell hit a sacrifice fly to score him. Then, in the fifth, the Bruins made the score 3-0: Andrew Reichenbach reached base on an error, and Jake Thran pounded a double down the left field line to bring him home.
With Morland still humming along, the Bruins tallied another in the sixth, as the Bruins executed another quality first-and-third play. And in the seventh, Newell singled in Jake Thran to stretch the lead to 5-0.
With Morland relieved in the sixth, Concordia Wisconsin finally broke through in the eighth. A two-out double from Isaac Tewes scored two and narrowed the score to 5-2. In the ninth, the game grew tighter still: Concordia Wisconsin loaded the bases and pushed one run across, but Jake Timlin recorded the final out, and the Bruins took the 5-3 win.
