NEWBERG, Ore. --- The Bruins scored in bunches on Saturday, sweeping Lewis & Clark by combined score of 27-4. In the first game, Dustin Wells pitched a gem, and the Bruins won 12-1. But in the second the Bruins outdid themselves, racking up 17 hits and 15 runs for a 15-3 win.
Recap:
Game One
The Bruins trounced the Pioneers in the early game on the strength of a five-run fifth. In the second, the Bruins got on the board with a Connor Newell RBI single and another run on a wild pitch, but the Pioneers got one back in the third on Matt Donovan's RBI groundout.
The Bruins tallied single runs in the third and fourth on Jake Thran's RBI single and AJ Valencia's groundout, but they broke out in the fifth. Leading 4-1, Newell doubled in two runs and scored himself on an error. Valencia then drove in another with a long double, and Caylen Clardy drilled a single to center to score the Bruins's fifth.
Up 9-1, the Bruins added three more in the eighth for good measure: Gabe Louthan reached home on another error, and pinch-hitter Zachery Muenster's single knocked in the last two for the 12-1 win.
Dustin Wells, the Bruin starter, was rarely troubled in his eight innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out eleven.
Game Two
The Pioneers led briefly: Sean Shepherd tripled in a run in the top of the first, and the Bruins didn't get on the board until the second. But when they scored, they scored in droves. Their five-run second was capped off by Brandon Wileman's three-run homer, followed soon thereafter by Caylen Clardy's solo shot.
In the fourth the Pioneers got one back on Conner Sick's RBI single, but the Bruins scored twice in the fifth on Jake Thran's two-RBI single, and once in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Up 7-2, the Bruins added five more in the seventh. Andrew Reichenbach led off the inning with a homer, and Connor Newell singled in Thran, who'd doubled. Wileman added two more RBIs with a strong single, and Clardy knocked in another with a single to right.
But the Bruins still weren't done at 13-2. In the eighth, Ansel Webster doubled in Jantzen Tamanaha, and then Wileman singled in Webster.
The Pioneers managed one more run in the ninth to make the final 15-3.
