Bruins Split With Blues

WALLA WALLA, Wash. --- The George Fox baseball team finally took the field Sunday, as the Bruins weathered the storm in a Northwest Conference doubleheader against the Whitman Blues. Both teams came away with wins, as the Bruins dropped the first game 3-1, but won the second 6-0.

Recap:
Game One:
It was Whitman who struck first in this one, managing to score in the bottom of the second and third innings to earn the early advantage.  

The Bruins struck back in the top of the sixth to narrow the deficit to just one. Andrew Reichenbach began the scoring effort with a single to left field and a subsequent single by Kyle Esquerra sent Reichenbach to second. Sam Swenson hit a sac-fly to earn the RBI and keep the game close.

The effort wasn't enough to take game one as the Bruins fell in a close one, 3-1.

Game Two:
George Fox found their rhythm in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Matt Voelzke hit his first collegiate home run to left field for the two RBIs, sending home Tristan Guillen who was on first after being hit by the pitcher.

The Bruins held Whitman scoreless while also managing to score an additional four runs, scoring three in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Houston Thom began the scoring in the top of the seventh with a double to left center field and a score off of a wild pitch. Guillen flied out to center field for the RBI, sending home Zach Rhoads. Sam Swenson also managed to score on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning.

The Bruins kept their foot on the gas pedal all the way through as an RBI double from Swenson in the top of the eighth set the final score at 6-0.

Top Performers:
Game One:
Sam Swenson had the RBI for the Bruins, while AJ Valencia and Kyle Esquerra got it done at the plate, each going two-for-four.

Game Two:
Matt Voelzke led the offense in game two with his two RBI homerun. Sam Swenson had his second RBI of the day and Tristan Guillen pitched in one as well. Alex Jondal received the nod on the mound for the Bruins and went six innings to earn his second win of the season.

What It Means:
The Bruins move to 6-13 on the season and 4-9 in the NWC.

What Comes Next:
The Bruins look to take the series Monday, March 20, with the final game set for 12p.m.
