NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox baseball team swept the Loggers of Puget Sound Sunday afternoon, as the Bruins beat the Loggers, 6-3.
Recap:
The Bruins struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Zachery Muenster began the action with a single to right center field. Andrew Reichenbach had a single to advance Muenster to third. Sam Swenson was hit by the pitcher to stack the bases for the Bruins. Brandon Wileman was hit by the pitcher, allowing Muenster to score. On the next at-bat, Connor Newell grounded out to third base for the RBI, allowing Reichenbach to score.
The Loggers scored in the top of the fifth to cut the Bruins' lead, but Sam Swenson came back with a homerun in the bottom of the fifth to widen the gap, setting the score at 3-1.
Puget Sound scored two in the top of the sixth to tie the game.
The Bruins had a perfect chance to take the game in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases stacked, Matt Voelzke stepped to the plate and hit a double to left field. The hit sent home three Bruins for the go-ahead runs.
Voelzke closed out the game with a save, striking out the final two batters.
Top Performers:
Voelzke led the team to victory with a three RBI double to win the game. Swenson, Wileman, and Newell chipped in an RBI each to contribute as well. AJ Atherton earned his first collegiate win and Voelzke recorded his fifth save on the season.
What It Means:
The Bruins improve to 17-17 on the season and 12-12 in the NWC. The Bruins just miss the cut for the NWC Tournament.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins will play four non-conference games to close out the season, with the first coming against Pacific Lutheran Friday, April 28, at 3p.m.
