NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's lacrosse team hosted the Loggers of Puget Sound for the final game of the season Sunday, defeating their conference opponents, 18-6.
Recap:
Emotions were high in the early going, as the Bruins honored their seven seniors before the game.
Miranda Edwords got the Bruins on track with a goal from a free position shot in the 26th minute to begin a four-goal run – two of which came from Jess Hanson.
The Loggers struck back with two goals in the 17th and 15th minutes to cut the Bruins' lead to just two, 4-2.
The teams traded goals back and forth before a three-goal run by the Bruins set the score at 8-4 going into halftime.
Edwords scorched the Loggers in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring three goals. Madison Strickland added one of her own to add to the Bruins' lead in the first three minutes, 12-8.
The Loggers scored again in the eighth and ninth minutes of the second half but were unable to stop the top-seeded Bruins. The clock ran down and George Fox won, 18-6.
Top Performers:
Edwords led the Bruins' offense, tallying a whopping eight goals on only 11 shots, all of which were on target. The scoring outburst set her season total at 53 goals on the season, good for second in the Northwest Conference. Jennifer Burke had a hat trick with three goals and Hanson tallied two to round out the scoring effort.
What It Means:
The win gives the Bruins their first undefeated NWC season, and sets a new program record for most wins in a single-season at 12. The Bruins finish 12-2 on the season and a perfect 8-0 in conference to earn NWC Champions.
Senior Sendoff:
The Bruins honored Edwords, Lauren Abshire, Yecenia Arrezola, Katelyn Bradshaw, Christine Doherty, Mikaela Easterlin and Erin Fettig as the first-ever four-year class in the women's lacrosse program.
