Bruins Split With 'Cats Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. --- The George Fox baseball team split with the Northwest Conference Champions Linfield College Sunday, as the Bruins lost the first game but rallied back for a game two win.

Recap:
Game One:

Alex Jondal and Linfield's Riley Newman had a pitcher's duel in the first game, as both pitchers kept the score close for most of the game.

Jondal gave up two runs in the third inning, as the 'Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a double scored the first two runs of the game.

Jondal did well to lock in for the remainder of the game, keeping the 'Cats off the scoreboard.

The Bruins' offense struck back in the top of the eighth after Zachery Muenster singled to center field to advance Jalen Drath and Derek Johnson to even the score up at 2-2.

Jondal finished his eight innings of action allowing six hits and two runs with three strikeouts, and freshman Matt Voelzke came in to close the game out.

The 'Cats were able to get the go-ahead run in the ninth with a walk-off double to left field for the winning run.

Game Two:
The second game was a different story, as the Bruins were the team to take advantage of the ninth inning.

Action started early in game two, as the 'Cats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The Bruins were able to keep up with a run in the second and third inning to close the deficit. Linfield scored one in the third and the fourth to go up 5-2.

The middle of the innings was scoreless until the Bruins got another lone run in the top of the seventh.

Trailing by two, the Bruins needed a big inning to take advantage over the 'Cats.

The Bruins opened up the ninth inning with a one-out single from Johnson and Muenster to put runners on first and third. Gavin Speegle hit a single to center field, scoring Johnson to put the Bruins within one. AJ Valencia singled to left field with one out still on the board and suddenly the Bruins tied the game up at 5-5. Drath was able to hit a sac-fly to centerfield, which scored the go-ahead run to give the Bruins the 6-5 advantage.

AJ Atherton came in to close the game out for the Bruins, as he secured the final out with a strikeout.
