Box Score

By: Alex Plusquellec

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox baseball team scored 14 runs on 18 hits Sunday, highlighted by a school-record eight doubles on the way to a lopsided 14-4 win over Whitman College.

Recap:

The Bruins fell down early as the Blues were able to get two across in the top of the first inning, but the Bruins continued their trend of scoring early. Sam Swenson's double in the bottom of the first was one of three on the day for the sophomore, and scored Jantzen Tamanaha to cut the deficit in half.

Dillon Blankenship reached on an error in his first at-bat which was enough to bring home Swenson and tie the game at 2-2.

The Blues produced another run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, but the Bruins managed five runs in the bottom half of the second. With the bases loaded, Tamanaha singled through the left side, scoring Matt Voelzke and AJ Valencia. Swenson followed with another double, this time scoring Jerred Seamons and Tamanaha, and after Austin Baek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded the Bruins held a 7-3 lead.

After Whitman scored in the top of the third, the Bruins went back to work at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Valencia, who finished the day a perfect 4 for 4, drove in Houston Thom and Blankenship with a two-out single to extend the Bruin lead to 9-4.

Isaac Olsen entered the game for the Bruins in the fourth and shut down the Blues offensive attack. The sophomore went six innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six on his way to picking up his first win.

The Bruins added two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth thanks to a two-RBI double from Thom. In the sixth, Tamanaha brought home two more on a double to left.

The Bruins put the final touches on a stellar offensive performance in the seventh as Valencia roped a double to left, scoring Baek and Voelzke.

The 14-4 win is the Bruins sixth of the young season.

Top Performers:

Valencia's perfect day at the plate produced four RBIs. Swenson's three doubles ties the school-record for most doubles in a game by a single player. Tamanaha found his groove as well, finishing the day 3 for 5 with three RBIs.

What It Means:

The Bruins hot start continues as they now sit at 6-1.
