AUSTIN, Texas --- The George Fox baseball team scored in all but one inning in its rematch with Schreiner University Saturday, routing the Mountaineers, 13-3.
Recap:
Sam Swenson got the Bruins started with a solo homer in the top of the first, setting the tone for the rest of the day. AJ Valencia's single in the top of the second brought home Derek Johnson and Matt Voelzke, giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Voelzke's RBI triple in the third brought home Kyler Brudwick before Swenson's second RBI of the day made it 5-0 Bruins. Brudwick added two more on a double down the right field line, giving his team a commanding 7-0 lead.
Landon Schirer received his first collegiate start for the Bruins, going four innings with the Bruins on top.
The Mountaineers were able to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but it wasn't enough to keep pace the hot bats of the Bruins.
With a 9-3 lead heading into the seventh, Matt Ramirez drew a bases loaded walk before Voelzke and Austin Baek each brought in runs to extend the lead to 12-3.
In the ninth, Brudwick scored on a wild pitch to polish off the big 13-3 victory.
Top Performers:
Swenson's first inning homer was his first of the season. Valencia led the way with three RBIs while Swenson and Brudwick each drove in two. Zach Stouder came in after Schirer and recorded his first win of the season after three dominating innings on the mound. After Stouder, Connor Olmstead came out of the bullpen and slammed the door shut on the Mountaineers. The pair combined to give up only three hits over the final five innings.
What It Means:
The 13-3 victory marks back-to-back wins for the Bruins, who now sit at 2-1 on the road trip.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins wrap up their trip in Texas Sunday against Rhodes. First pitch is set for 8 a.m.
