Box Score SPOKANE --- The No. 18 George Fox baseball team dropped the rubber match Sunday, as the Bruins weren't able to stop the Whitworth Pirates from taking the sweep, 7-1.
Recap:
Whitworth was able to capitalize early, scoring one in the bottom of the second. Bruins' starter Alex Jondal got the start for the Bruins and settled down soon after the one run scored. He gave up just two runs in his six innings of work, pitching four scoreless innings. The Bruins five power was tamed most of the day, as the Pirates held the Bruins to three hits.
Kyler Brudwick singled through the right side in the top of the fifth to give the Bruins some life. After stealing second, Kyle Esquerra flew out to centerfield helping Brudwick move to third. Matt Voelzke then hit a sac-fly to right field to score the Bruins only run.
The Pirates scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to end the game, 7-1.
Top Performers:
Jondal was hit with the loss, but only allowed two runs in six innings with four strikeouts. Brudwick, Voelzke and Matthew Ramirez were the only Bruins to record a hit.
What It Means:
The Bruins drop their first Northwest Conference series of the season and fall to 14-6 and 8-4 in the NWC.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins will host Whitman March 17-18 back on Morse Athletic Field.
