Box Score NEWBERG --- The No. 24-ranked George Fox baseball team couldn't capitalize against the visiting Blues of Whitman College Sunday, as the Bruins dropped the final game of the series, 5-4.
Recap:
Alex Jondal received the start for the Bruins in the rubber match and was cruising in the first four innings of play.
Jondal was able to get some run support from his teammates in the bottom of the fourth, as Kyle Esquerra kicked off the inning with a single to right field. Austin Baek laid down a beautiful bunt to reach first and advance Esquerra to second. Dillon Blankenship hit a screamer down the left field line to bring home both Esquerra and Baek, and the Bruins found themselves up 2-0. Marc Audet was able to bring home Blankenship on a sac fly as the Bruins closed out the inning with a 3-0 lead.
The Blues wasted no time responding, as the away team put up four runs in the top of the fifth.
Sam Swenson looked to get to the Bruins back on track in the bottom of the seventh. The sophomore hit a home run to left field to tie the game up at 4-4.
A late double to left center in the top of the ninth gave the Blues the go-ahead run to steal the series from the Bruins.
Top Performers:
Although Jondal was hit with the loss, the senior pitched 8.1 innings with five strikeouts. Blankenship went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs, while Kyler Brudwick and Austin Bake both recorded a multi-hit game.
What It Means:
With the loss, the Bruins drop to 14-9 on the season and 8-7 in the NWC.
What Comes Next:
George Fox will look to get back on track with a series matchup against Willamette on the road March 24-25.
