Voelzke and Glenn Propel Bruins Over TIgers

Box Score

NEWBERG --- Big games from Turner Glenn and Matt Voelzke helped the George Fox baseball team beat Occidental 11-8 in a weekday nonconference game.

Recap:

The Bruins were able to strike first in the bottom of the second, putting up four runs thanks in part to Glenn and Voelzke. Glenn hit a double to left field to bring home Jerred Seamons and Kyle Esquerra to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage. On the very next at-bat, Voelzke drilled a ball over the right-field fence for a two-run home run.

The Tigers managed to get a run in the top of the third after a groundout moved the bases for their first score. The Bruins answered in the bottom half of the inning after Kyle Esquerra hit a single through the left side to score Seamons. Voelzke scored Esquerra two batters later with a single to right field to give the Bruins a 6-1 lead.

The Tigers cut into the Bruins lead in the top of the fourth, as bats started to heat up. Oxy scratched four runs across home plate to bring the game within one, 6-5.

George Fox wouldn't let the Tigers' momentum be an issue, as the home team continued to pour it on at the plate. Dillon Blankenship hit a big triple to right field to score Sam Swenson, who got on by a single. Esquerra singled through the left side again to score Blankenship, and Esquerra scored after a series of wild pitches.

The Bruins led 9-5 after four innings of play.

The game settled down soon after, as neither team would score until the seventh inning.

The Tigers tacked on three more runs to bring the game within one again, 9-8, but the Bruins were clutch in the eighth.

Seamons drew a full-count walk and Glenn hit a two-out single to left field. With runners on first and second, Voelzke came up to the plate and crushed a ball to the left-center fence for the triple and the two RBIs.

Voelzke came in to seal the deal for the Bruins, as the sophomore recorded his sixth save of the season.
