NEWBERG --- The George Fox men's soccer team hosted Northwest (Wash.) on Saturday, losing a nail-biter at the very end, 1-0.
Recap:
The Bruin offense tested the opposing keeper early, putting two shots on goal in the first fifteen minutes of play.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, but neither team was able to find the back of the net through the first 45 minutes.
The second half was much of the same story as both offenses struggled to create chances. George Fox locked in on defense and shut down a couple key offensive pushes by Northwest to keep it even.
Micah Rickard took a shot against the opposing keeper with just over a minute remaining, but the would-be game winner was blocked by the Northwest defense and the game went into extra time, 0-0.
Northwest scored in the 101st minute as the Bruins narrowly lost a competitive one, 1-0.
"I knew from coaching at Southern Oregon that Northwest would be very organized, good on set pieces, and a big, athletic squad - I think we saw that today, and we were a little fatigued from yesterday while [Northwest] was fresh," Coach Biniam Afenegus said after the match.
Top Performers:
Bryce Turnipseed paced the Bruins in shots on target, tallying two. Rickard contributed three shots, one of which was on goal.
What It Means:
The Bruins open up their season 1-1 after Saturday's play.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins will travel to California next week for a matchup against Soka University on September 8 at 4:30 pm.
