Bruins Explode In Big Win Over Kingsmen

TUCSON --- The George Fox baseball team ended the Tucson Invitational with a bang on Sunday, beating California Lutheran, 20-5.

Recap:

The Bruins found their bats on the final day of the four-game road trip, exploding for 21 hits and 20 RBIs in the second win of the season.

In the fourth straight game of the season, the Bruins allowed their opposition to score in the opening inning. The Kingsmen brought home two runs as the result of a fielding error that gave Cal Lu a 2-0 lead. George Fox responded emphatically in the bottom of the first, recording a season-best eight runs to answer CLU.

Matt Voelzke opened the game up with a leadoff walk and Jason Garcia singled down the right field line to put runners on first and second. Kyler Brudwick brought Voelzke home on a single to left field, while Sam Swenson hit the Bruins' first home run of the season to clear the bases and give the Bruins a 4-2 lead. After back-to-back outs, the Bruins rallied off four more runs as Jantzen Tamanaha brought in two and Brudwick hit another single to score Voelzke and Tamanaha.

After the dust settled, the Bruins led 8-2.

The Kingsmen were able to score in the second and third innings to keep things interesting, but the Bruins put the game away in the third with six more runs. A Brudwick homer to left field scored two as the bats continued to stay hot for George Fox. Chase Fetzer, Jerred Seamons, and Colby Watilo all recorded RBIs to give the Bruins a 14-4 advantage.

Jason Garcia hit a solo home run to start the bottom of the fourth and extend the Bruins' lead to 11, 15-4. Garcia kept things going in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to center field and Swenson squared up another single to score Voelzke for the third time.  

George Fox ended the game early with three more runs in the seventh to secure the 20-5 victory. The game was called early with a drop-dead-time due to travel by both teams.

Top Performers:

Isaac Olson grabbed his first win of the season after replacing Landon Schirer in the fourth. Olson recorded four strikeouts and didn't allow a run.

Jason Garcia went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, two singles and two RBIs. Brudwick went 3-5 at the plate with a team-high five RBIs. Matt Voelzke, Garcia, Brudwick, Sam Swenson, Jerred Seamons, and Jantzen Tamanaha all recorded multi-hit games.

What It Means:

The Bruins finished the weekend at 2-2.

What Comes Next:

The road trip continues as the Bruins will travel to Georgia to take on Millsaps, Piedmont, and Oglethorpe Feb. 15-17. The first game is against Millsaps on Feb. 15 with first pitch set for 12 pm (PST).
