Bruins Drop Saturday's Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON --- The George Fox baseball team dropped both of its games on Saturday, as the Bruins fell to La Verne, 12-2, and Sul Ross St, 13-10, on the second day of the Tucson Invitational.

Recap:

Game One:

The Bruins dug themselves in a hole to start against the Leopards in game one, allowing six runs in the bottom of the first. A couple of walks and a pair of singles helped the Leopards jump out to a 6-0 lead after one inning of play.

Things settled down in the second inning and the Bruins were able to cross home plate in the top of the third. Matt Voelzke got on base with a single up the middle. Trevor Nannini moved Voelzke to second after a single of his own and Kyler Brudwick recorded the RBI single to center field to put the Bruins on the board.

La Verne responded quickly, though, scratching across two in the bottom half of the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead after five.

The Leopards capped off their victory with another run in the seventh.

Marc Audet provided the final run of the game in the top of the ninth after hitting a triple to center field to bring home Jayce Lien.

Game Two:

In the second game against the Lobos of Sul Ross St., the Bruins were unable to spark any momentum from the mound. The Lobos capitalized in the bottom of the second after a pair of walks and two hit batters gave Sul Ross St. its first run of the game. In fact, four of the five runs scored by the Lobos in the second inning came by walk.

Sul Ross St. remained patient at the plate and recorded one run in the third and three in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

The Bruins didn't go down without a fight, though, rallying back with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Matt Ramirez kicked off the rally with a single to center field, while Jason Garcia beat out the throw from the Lobos' shortstop to put two runners on base. Trevor Nannini drew a well-crafted walk on the next at-bat, loading the bases for Kyler Brudwick. Brudwick gave the Bruins their first run of the game after an RBI walk. Sam Swenson followed suit with an RBI of his own and Jerred Seamons closed out the inning with an RBI single, scoring Brudwick.

After closing the gap to 9-5 in the top of the fifth, the Bruins were unable to keep the Lobos off the board. Sul Ross St. managed to answer back with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, keeping its distance from George Fox.

The Bruins tallied one run in the sixth and exploded in the seventh to keep things interesting. George Fox put up five runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to three, 13-10.

The rally was cut short as the Lobos came away with a 13-10 victory.
