Box Score NEWBERG --- The George Fox baseball team hosted its third game of a weekend series against the Occidental College Tigers and fell 4-1 in the finale.
Recap
The Bruins put Matt Voelzke on the mound to start and got six quality innings from the senior, but it was the Tigers that jumped on the scoreboard first. A run in the top of the third broke up a pitchers' duel and gave Oxy the lead for good.
The Bruins got runners on in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings but stranded them on base each time in a 3-0 game that kept the momentum on the Tigers' side. Finally, a leadoff double by Matt Ramirez in the sixth was cashed in for a run by Chase Fetzer with a sacrifice fly into right field.
The Bruins were unable to scratch another run across, however, and the Tigers tacked on one more in the top of the ninth to ice a 4-1 win.
George Fox committed uncharacteristic errors on defense during the game on routine plays but also found a way to make the plays it needed in key moments on defense, including helping its pitching staff out of two bases-loaded jams in the third and the seventh innings to help preserve their chances.
