PORTLAND --- The George Fox women's tennis team claimed three singles outings and the final doubles match in a 5-4 loss at Lewis & Clark on Saturday.
Doubles
Sophomore Megan Wilks and freshman Ellie Mangan combined for the Bruins lone victory in doubles action, recording an 8-7 victory at No. 3. The juniors did not fare so well as the combo of Sophia Lawrence and Laney Search dropped a tough 8-6 battle at No. 1 after Jillian Studer and Taylor Morris fell 8-1 at No. 2.
Head coach Rick Cruz was very proud of the effort his squad put forth in doubles competition, especially from the underclassmen.
"Megan and Ellie fought back and won a close doubles match giving us a chance going into the singles."
Singles
The Bruins netted victories at No. 3-5 singles with Danielle Brown, Search, and Morris all duking it out in three-set matches. Brown started the singles scoring with a 4-6, 6-0. 6-4 victory at No. 3 with Search posting a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win shortly after. Morris earned the Bruins' final point of the day after defeating her opponent 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.
Lawrence and Studer were dealt losses at No. 1 and 2 singles while Alyssa Byde dropped her No. 6 match.
"We showed some toughness and grit winning all three matches that went to three," said Cruz. "While it was a disappointing loss, there were plenty of positives to build on."
What It Means
The Bruins have gone 3-3 in the last six matches, moving to 4-4 overall with a 1-1 in Northwest Conference action.
What Happens Next
The Bruins will look to bounce back tomorrow when they host Willamette in their second NWC contest in as many days. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
