NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's tennis team won its season opener on Sunday, Feb. 28, with a decisive 8-1 final over the College of Idaho 'Yotes.
How It Happened
The Bruins swept the doubles flights with strong play from their pairings of Sophia Lawrence/Laney Search, Ellie Mangan/Olivia Morris, and Emily McDonald/Alyssa Byde at the first, second, and third flights.
In singles play, the Bruins were able to win five of six to take the day with a near-perfect outing against their NAIA foes. Laney Search won an impressive battle at the second singles spot 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, Taylor Morris collected a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3, and Ellie Mangan swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Danielle Brown and Brenna VanderYacht each collected 6-1, 6-0 wins in their singles matchups to finish the day.
Their Thoughts
"After almost a year of competing against each other it was great to finally compete against another opponent," coach Rick Cruz said afterward. "Our doubles teams were aggressive and set the tone for the singles. Laney and Taylor pulled out a couple of tough matches and the bottom half of the lineup all played well. We were able to use nine players, showing the depth of this team."

The Bruins will have two weeks to prep for their Northwest Conference opener at Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma.
