Box Score 2 NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox baseball team traded sweeps with Willamette on Sunday, Mar. 14, by dropping two after winning both on Saturday.
How It Happened
The Bruins took an early 3-1 lead after the first frame but the Bearcats answered with two in the second to tie it. Single runs for Fox in the second and third innings made it 5-3 in the Bruins' favor, but the Bearcats jumped in front with a three-run fifth inning and added another in the sixth. Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins plated three to take an 8-7 lead but gave it away in the top of the seventh for a 9-8 final.
In game two, the Bearcats benefited early from a two-run shot in the first, but Leon Johnson III got one run back with a leadoff solo shot. From that point on the game got away from the Bruins as the Bearcats went on to stake a 19-4 lead after plating 14 runs in the top of the fifth. The Bruins scratched one across in the fifth, but the rally fell well short of the mark in a 19-5 final.
Top Performers
Trevor Nannini went 2-for-4 in game one with a triple and Johnson III added a tank and an RBI walk in game two at the plate, while Travis Miller was a perfect 1-for-1 with four walks.
What It Means
George Fox drops to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference after the split series, while Willamette improves to 8-4 and 2-2 in NWC action.
What Happens Next
The Bruins will have a bye next weekend and can rest and prepare for their next NWC series at Pacific Lutheran on Mar. 27 & 28.
