Box Score 2 NEWBERG, Ore. --- The Bruins' baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against the Whitworth Pirates on Saturday, Mar. 6, with an 8-3 win in game one and a 5-3 loss in game two.
How It Happened
George Fox broke up a scoreless pitchers' duel in the third with three runs in the third. The Bruins loaded the bases with a single, a ground-rule double, and a walk before scoring on a balk, a single, and a sac fly to right. Whitworth got two runs across in the sixth, but the Bruins got both of those back, and then some, after batting through the order and plating five in their half of the sixth. A late Whitworth run in the eighth fell short and George Fox took the opener, 8-3.
Sean Weise started the second game and punched out seven of the first nine Pirates he faced. Wiese had a perfect game into the fourth frame before Whitworth erased the Bruins' 1-0 lead with a two-run shot. The two teams cruised through the middle innings as Wiese and the Pirates' starter stayed locked in. In the sixth, the Bruins used an Emery Miller single and some crafty base running from Breyndon Nakamura to tied the game at 2-2. The Pirates plated three in the seventh, however, and finished the frame out to take a 5-3 win after the Bruins scratched one through in the seventh.
Top Performers
Wiese went into the seventh and struck out eight in a very effective outing. Travis Miller was 3-for-3 in game one with two RBI and a double, while Matthew Sebolsky was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.
Their Thoughts
"I though in game one we did a good job and were able to string some good at-bats together and put pressure [on Whitworth]," said head coach Kevin Kopple after the day. "I thought their guy threw great in game two and kept us off-balance and we just didn't get the hits we needed to. Sean threw great for us overall and sometimes you come out on the other end on that."
What It Means
The Bruins are now 3-3 on the year while the Pirates pick up their first win and move to 1-4.
What Happens Next
Whitworth and George Fox will finish the non-conference series on Sunday in Newberg at 11:00 am.
