NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox baseball team took on Whitworth once again, this time in a Northwest Conference matchup, and dropped a doubleheader with the Pirates, 17-11 and 4-3.
How It Happened
The day began with a high-scoring first inning, immediately putting the Pirates above the Bruins 8-6. A pair of homers only served to raise the Pirates' score, and despite Brandon King notching a two-RBI home run in the fifth and Jared Whitaker hitting a bases-clearing triple in the eighth, it wasn't enough to crack the Pirates' lead, and they took the first game 17-11.
The Bruins began game two with three runs in the first, but their bats cooled after that and they never scored again. The series of scoreless innings that followed was broken by the Pirates in the fifth. The Pirates gained two runs over the next two innings, putting them ahead, and when the Bruins needed a score the most, the Pirates struck them out, winning the game 4-3.
Top Performers
Chase Fetzer notched five RBI, a double, and a homer, while Sean Wiese struck the Pirates out seven times in his six innings of work.
What It Means
The Bruins drop to 9-8 in the NWC standards and 14-11 overall. The Pirates grow to 7-11 in conference and 8-17 overall.
What Happens Next
George Fox will finish the season series against the Pirates at home on Sunday, Apr. 18, with a 12:00 pm start.
