NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's tennis program has made the cut for the Northwest Conference Tournament for the second time in as many seasons and will face the top-seeded tournament host, No. 37 Linfield, on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
George Fox climbed to no. 16 in the West Region this spring and won its way into the tourney field on the last weekend of the regular season with a clean sweep of Pacific Lutheran on Apr. 16 and a 7-2 win over Puget Sound in its Senior Day match on Apr. 17.
The Bruins beat out Pacific (Ore.) for the final spot and likely would have been in the tournament field regardless with a head-to-head win over the Boxers earlier this season, but removed all doubt with the winning final weekend.
Fox finished with a 5-3 conference record to earn the fourth and final seed in the field, one win behind third-seeded Whitworth. Fox will face a nationally-ranked Wildcats squad that finished the regular season with a perfect conference record and an 11-match winning streak.
The Bruins were unable to come away with a win in their regular-season matchup with the Wildcats, but they were able to get a doubles win from the tandem of Kalli Wiker and Cassey Hitch in the match. Danielle Brown also had a great match in singles, taking her no. 1 opponent to a superset final with a 6-4, 2-6, 0-1 defeat.
The Bruins have positive momentum from the final stretch of the season and have been battle-tested in their Spring Break matchups as well, so expect a good fight from the Fox unit this weekend. Doubles play will begin in McMinnville with first ball at 10:00 am against the Wildcats in a first-to-five format wherein play will halt as soon as the match is clinched. If the Bruins are able to avenge their previous loss, the championship is set for Sunday at 12:00 pm on the Wildcats' courts.
