Bruins Split High-Scoring, Dramatic Games Against Whitworth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Wash. – The George Fox baseball team played two games that had video-game-like numbers against the Whitworth Pirates on Saturday, losing the first,18-13 while winning the second, 11-10.

Game One
The Bruins lost a high-scoring affair — managing to put up 13 runs, but couldn't overcome an 11-run first inning from the Pirates.

Fox got on the board first, scoring two runs off a Jeremy Sangalang RBI single and a balk by the Whitworth pitcher. The Pirates then scored the most runs against the Bruins in a single inning during the entire season. Whitworth loaded the bases with one out, then used rally-ball to score the 11 runs, scoring all of their runs without hitting a single extra-base hit. Walks hurt the Fox pitchers, as they walked five batters in the first inning alone. Fox went into the top half of the second down nine, 11-2.

The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second, pushing the Bruins' deficit to 11 runs. The Bruins pulled out a big offensive inning in the third, scoring nine runs in the frame. They got three runs off a Jonathan Stone double, and they also got a big swing from Matthew Sebolsky who also had an RBI double. Sangalang came up with the bases loaded, and hit the Bruins' third grand slam of the season, putting four more runs on the board. At the end of the explosive frame, the Bruins found themselves down just two runs, losing 13-11.

Fox inched closer in the fourth, scoring a run after getting a runner to third, who scored on another balk by Whitworth. The Pirates responded with two more runs in the home half, pushing their lead to 15-12. The Pirates scored the last of their runs in the fifth inning, putting up three more, as the Bruins fell behind, 18-12.

Fox scored one more run on a Spencer Roos RBI single, but it would be their last of the game as they lost the first game, 18-13.

Game Two
The second game featured a dramatic ninth inning that saw the game go into extra innings where the Bruins pulled out a resilient win, 11-10, and split the doubleheader.

The Bruins started down early, giving up three runs in the first inning and then two more in the second to go down, 5-0. Fox tacked on a run in the third to get their scoring started, with Jared Miller scoring off a Breyndon Nakamura sacrifice fly. Fox tied the game in the fifth in a four-run inning that featured Sangalang's second home run of the day.

With the game tied, 5-5, both teams pitched a scoreless sixth inning, before Fox put up three runs in the seventh inning. Scoring first off a Nakamura two-RBI triple, then again after a walk with the bases loaded. The Bruins left the bases loaded, however, after a strikeout and a groundout. The opportunity would come back to cost the Bruins' chances in preventing extras.

The Bruins hit a double-digit run count in the top half of the ninth inning, scoring two runs and pushing their lead to five runs going into the home half of the final frame. With the game almost certainly in the hands of the Bruins, it seemed like smooth sailing. However, the Pirates loaded the bases quickly, then hit a grand slam to cut the Bruins' lead to just one, 10-9. The Pirates quickly tied the game off of a solo shot that tied the game at 10. The Bruins barely managed to get out of the inning, stranding two Pirates runners as they went into the 10th inning.

The Bruins offense knew what to do in extras, as Sangalang did what he has done all season – getting on base. The junior got on first after working a walk, and Shane White stepped into the box to pinch-hit for Fox. White worked some magic, hitting a go-ahead RBI double that gave the Bruins a one-run lead going into the bottom of the 10th.

With the game on the line, the Bruins called on Alex Abbott – looking for redemption after the ninth inning – to close it out on the bump. Abbott came up huge, getting three outs (the last of which came with two runners on base for the Pirates) as the Bruins picked up the win, 11-10.
