4/10/2023 5:38:00 PM

TACOMA, Wash. -- Eight Bruins traveled to Puget Sound on Monday afternoon, to compete at the Northwest Conference Multis. After day one, Brecken VandenHoek and Tayler Phillips led the field of conference competition, before taking home the victory on day two as the Bruins gained valuable points toward the NWC championship.

Day One
VandenHoek finished in either first or second place in all four of the Heptathlon events, winning the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.26 and the 200m with a time of 27.35. The senior heads into day two with 2612 points, just ahead of teammate Elisabeth Jensen.

Jensen won the high jump on the day with her mark of 1.52 meters and currently sits in second with 2577 points. Two other Bruins, Jenna Huntsman, and Breeauna O'Rear, sit in fifth and seventh place out of nine competitors, respectively.

On the men's side, Phillips paces the field with his combined total of 3574. Much like VandenHoek, The senior placed first or second in all of the day's competitions — winning the 100m with a time of 11.18 and the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters.

Blake Smith was the next Bruin on the board, sitting in fifth with 3025 points after the first day. Smith won the long jump with a mark of 6.47 meters, finishing fifth in the 400m. Levi Gibson and Max Ashour also competed for Fox, with Gibson sitting in ninth place and Ashour close behind in tenth.

Day Two
VandenHoek and Jensen scored 4258 and 4057 points, respectively, earning valuable points for the Bruins; a first-place finish was worth 10 points toward the NWC championship, while second was worth eight. VandenHoek won both the high jump and the long jump en route to her third consecutive heptathlon victory — since the NWC started sponsoring the multis in 2017, the George Fox women have not lost the competition.

Huntsman and O'Rear each improved one place from day one, with Huntsman finishing fourth and O'Rear coming in sixth. In total, the Bruin women earned 26 points, 19 points ahead of second-place Lewis & Clark.

On the men's side, Phillips won by over 600 points, finishing with 6672. Phillips won the javelin by nearly six meters, while Gibson followed in his footsteps with a win in the pole vault. Gibson was the next-placing Bruin, coming in seventh place overall with 5768 points. Behind Gibson was Ashour in ninth and Smith in tenth.

Much like the women's team, the men's team put their squad in good standing for the NWC Championship — finishing the day with 12 points. Pacific Lutheran was next behind the Bruins with eight points, while Linfield finished third with seven.
