FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- George Fox Women's tennis kicked off their season at the Pacific 5 Way Tournament this weekend. The tournament was structured with several best of three style matches that included two singles matches and one doubles match between teams of two from each university.
How it Happened
Saturday:
The Bruins started off their day strong with three out of the four teams advancing to the second round.
Kalli Wiker and
Riley Bobkiewicz received the two seed in the draw, earning them a bye into the second round. They would later beat Pacific's Mia Yamaguchi and Valentina Casab-Klescova to advance to the semifinals, winning 8-1 in doubles play, then 3-6, 6-3, 10-4, and 4-6, 6-1, 10-3, in singles play.
Arianna Radar and
Cassey Hitch dominated their first match of the day, beating Linfield's Emma Tuttle and Kaitlynn Canubida 6-3 in a doubles match. They advanced to the semifinals as well, defeating Bruin teammates
Abigail Bond and
Juhree Kizziar on their way. The Radar/Hitch duo won the doubles match 8-3, before splitting the singles matches 6-2, 6-4, and 4-6, 4-6.
Bond and Kizziar won their first round matchup over Lewis and Clark's Hayley Kreps and Smith-Euben 6-3, before dropping their second round matchup to the Radar/Hitch duo.
Sophie Denham and Shannah Denham teamed up as the final Fox duo to take the courts. The sisters lost their first round doubles match 6-4 to Pacific's Chloe Takahashi and Tiara Young, but bounced back with a victory over Lewis and Clark's Maya Curry and Kacie Lau to advance to the consolation semifinals. They dropped the doubles match against the Pios duo 8-6, but won both of their singles matches 6-0, 6-0, and 7-5, 6-4, to squeak out the victory.
Sunday:
Day two saw Bruins reach the championship of each side of the bracket. After losing the first round, the Denham duo made it to the consolation finals after taking down Lewis and Clark's Emma Loucks and Allison Gabelman in the semifinals. The Bruins won 8-7 (3) in the doubles portion, and split the singles matches 6-4, 4-6 (5), and by default to advance. In the consolation finals, Denham and Denham tamed the Wildcats, taking down Linfield's Tuttle and Canubida 8-5 in doubles, then 6-1, 6-1, and by default in the singles matches.
On the championship side, Fox's Radar and Hitch dropped their first match Sunday to Pacific's Cassidy Binder and Stella Nishimura 8-1, with the Boxers taking the singles matches 6-0, 6-0, and 6-2, 6-1 as well.
Wiker and Bobkiewicz made it to the championship final, defeating Pacific's Chloe Takahashi and Tiara Yeung 8-4 in the semis. The Bruins secured the victory, winning 7-5, 0-6 (8) and 6-1, 6-0 in the singles matches. Their run ended to Pacific's Binder and Nishimura in the final, dropping the match 8-2 in doubles play, then 6-0, 6-0, and 5-7, 7-5 (4) in singles.
Coach's Thoughts
"This weekend was a good test for our players," Said Head Coach
Rick Cruz. "We showed we can compete with the best players in the conference, but our goal is to beat the best. NExt week we have an opportunity to show improvement at the ITA's."
What Happens Next
The Bruins get back in action this weekend, September 27th-29th at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Lewis and Clark in Vancouver, Washington.
