Bruins Down Puget Sound in Tacoma

2/22/2026 4:42:00 PM

Box Score TACOMA, Wash. -- The Bruins ended their weekend with a stellar 5-1 finish against Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash.

How It Happened
Momentum continues to swell for the Bruins after taking down Puget Sound in similar fashion to their contest against yesterday's opponent, Willamette, by giving up only one point on the day.

Overall, doubles matches this year have posed the most trouble for Fox. The confidence boost of going from a doubles victory to singles matches is undeniable, which is why the Bruins wanted to secure that insurance early. Audrey Gardner and Nicole Schnurbusch started their contest against the Loggers by going down 0-2 but put up strong performances to trail 3-2 before their opponent won the next four games to complete the No. 3 doubles match, 6-2. On court two, Shanah Denham and Juhree Kizziar started hot by leading 2-0 and were pushed to a 3-3 tie. The dynamic duo ended on their terms, finishing off their adversaries 6-3 to force the doubles point to depend on the winner of court No. 1. Sophie Denham and Riley Bobkiewicz nearly pulled off their own comeback against their opponent, as they closed in while down only 4-5; however, the match ended 6-4 in Puget Sound's favor, giving them the first point of the day.

Following multiple doubles match losses, GFU decided that losing another set would not be in the cards. Every court from one to six proceeded to win every set they played in singles and confirmed the victory for the Bruins.

Kizziar was the first domino to fall, posting a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory against her opponent. So. Denham nearly mimicked Kizziar by defeating her adversary 6-0, 6-2 for the second match that concluded on the No. 3 singles court. Bobkiewicz showed poise in her first set on the No. 1 singles court by closing out a 5-4 lead, 7-4, and taking her second set from 3-3 to 6-3, which gave Fox its third point of the day.

Sh. Denham controlled the baseline and put away her opponent, Frances English, in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to secure the official victory for the Bruins. On court No. 5, Gardner finished her first set in dominant fashion, 6-1, and demonstrated the resilience gained throughout the season by closing out her second set after being tied 5-5 to win 7-6. Schnurbusch also saw a tight conclusion to her match after finding herself tied 4-4 in her first set and carving out the win, 6-4, before putting away the Loggers for the day by turning a 5-5 position into a 7-5 finish in set two, completing the clean singles slate for the Bruins.

The Bruins now have back-to-back wins under their belt, both coming on the road, making their presence felt in the Northwest and moving to a 2-1 conference record.

Coach's Thoughts
"It was another great team win," said Bruin head coach Rick Cruz. "After a slow start in doubles, the girls did a great job of bouncing back in singles."

What Happens Next
The Bruins will return to action on Saturday, February 28, at 9:00 a.m. to compete against Whitman College at home.
