NEWBERG, Ore. - With all 13 available players scoring, including
five in double figures, the George Fox University Bruins opened
their 2007-08 women's basketball season by setting six new team
records in a 111-13 breeze past the Multnomah Bible College Lions
Friday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
The Lions, playing their first year of intercollegiate
basketball with only one player over 5'8" and five freshman among
their eight players, were no match for the bigger and
more-experienced Bruins, who feature seven seniors and six players
6'0" or better. George Fox scored the first 34 points of the game
before Multnomah snapped the string with a bucket by Carolyn Barger
at the 8:23 mark, and led 57-6 at the half.
In the second half, the Bruins torched the nets for a .647
percentage, canning 22-34 from the field to stretch their lead.
Jordan Westering's free throw with 3:38 left gave the Bruins their
first 100-point game in two years, and her three-point play on a
layup and free throw made it 106-11, breaking the previous GFU
scoring record of 105 against Western Baptist (now Corban) in 1992.
B.B. Gardner's three-pointer with 49 seconds left gave the
Bruins a 100-point bulge of 111-11 before a pair of free throws by
Susanna Duke resulted in the final score and a margin of 98 points,
another Bruin record. George Fox also established new marks for
most field goals (47), most assists (34), fewest points by an
opponent (13), and lowest field goal percentage by an opponent
(.105, 4-38).
Westering, in her first college game, paced the Bruins with 16
points, Kali Ramey added 14, and Jaime Hubka, Katy Campbell, and
Kelsi Leach scored 11 apiece. Lindsay Keener had 9 rebounds and 6
assists to lead the Bruins, and Mandee Spotts also had 6 assists.
The Bruins held a 57-18 advantage on the boards and shot .566
(47-83) for the game.
Elizabeth Clemen led the Lions with 5 points, and Camilla
Jacobson and Duke had 3 rebounds each.
George Fox (1-0) is back in action Saturday at Warner Pacific
College, tipping off at 7:00 p.m. Multnomah (1-7) returns home to
host Mt. Hood Community College Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
