NEWBERG, Ore. - Jumping out to a 7-1 lead and taking a
double-digit lead for good eight minutes into the game, the George
Fox University Bruins cruised past the Warner Pacific College
Knights 71-30 for their fifth straight win in a non-conference
women's basketball game Saturday evening here at the Wheeler Sports
Center's Miller Gym.
The Bruins trailed only once in the game when Lindsey Wells hit
a free throw for the Knights 10 seconds into the game. Katy
Campbell's three-pointer 25 seconds later sparked a 7-0 run that
gave the Bruins the lead for good, and Jaime Hubka hit a trey, one
of three for her in the half, to make it 21-9 with 12:13 left in
the period. The George Fox lead, which was 34-17 at the break,
remained in double figures the rest of the way.
The Bruins continued to build onto their advantage throughout
the second half. MaryAnne Samples hit a three to make it a 20-point
difference at 39-19 four minutes into the period, and they doubled
that to 40 points on a Kelsi Leach layup with 5:48 left which made
it 63-22. The largest lead the Bruins had was 43 points at 71-28 on
a three-pointer by Jordan Westering with 2:11 to go.
Twelve of the 13 Bruins who played scored, although only Melissa
Marek-Farris with 11 points reached double figures. The Bruins were
especially hot from three-point range, hitting 10-21 (.476).
Kristen Shielee had game highs of 10 rebounds and four blocked
shots as the Bruins held a 42-23 margin on the boards and blocked
eight shots in all. Campbell had four assists and three steals.
Danica Wilson led the Knights with eight points and Bethany
Baumann had five rebounds. Karissa Boyd passed out five assists.
George Fox (5-0) is off for exams next week, then returns to
action in the Posada Royale #1 Tournament Nov. 17-18 at California
Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Bruins will first
meet William Smith College on Monday at 1:00 p.m. Warner Pacific
(2-5) visits St. Martin's University on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in a
game that was postponed from Dec. 7 due to the closure of
Interstate 5 near Chehalis, Wash.
