SALEM, Ore. - With senior posts Melissa Marek-Farris and Katy
Campbell scoring 15 and 13 points respectively, the 18th-ranked
George Fox University Bruins posted their sixth win in a row with a
68-37 win over the Willamette University Bearcats in a Northwest
Conference women's basketball game Friday evening here at Cone
Field House.
The Bruins jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two-and-a-half
minutes on a pair of free throws by Marek-Farris, a layup and free
throw by Campbell, and another layup by Campbell. Jenny Fillion
finally put the Bearcats on the scoreboard with a jumper in the
lane with 16:40 to go in the half, but the Bruins quickly upped
their lead to double figures on a basket by Marek-Farris and
consecutive steals and layups by Tiffany Behary in the space of 23
seconds, making it 13-2 with 15:18 remaining.
The Bruins eventually built their margin to 26 points at 40-14
on a three-pointer by Nicole Hudson with 38 seconds left before the
break, and were up 40-16 at halftime. Campbell had all 13 of her
points in the first half and Marek-Farris nine at the break, while
Fillion led the Bearcats with 10.
Marek-Farris scored on layups to open the second half as the
Bruins continued to extend their advantage. The Bruins' largest
lead was 40 points when Kelsi Leach scored on a power move to make
it 58-18 with 12 minutes to play, and the Bearcats got no closer
than 28 the rest of the game. It was the 11th straight win in the
series for the Bruins.
Marek-Farris and Campbell were the only double-figure scorers
for the Bruins, who shot .481 (25-52) from the field, including
.438 (7-16) from three-point range. Marek-Farris had seven rebounds
and a pair of blocked shots, while Campbell had three assists and
Behary made four steals.
Fillion was the only Bearcat to reach double digits with 18
points, while twin sister Molly Fillion had 11 rebounds as Bearcats
edged the Bruins on the boards 39-37. Jenny Fillion had four
steals, and Molly Fillion had two assists. Willamette was held to a
.262 shooting percentage (16-61) and struggled from beyond the arc,
making only one of 13 attempts.
George Fox (11-1, NWC 3-0) visit s Yamhill County rival Linfield
College while Willamette (2-10, NWC 0-3) visits Pacific Lutheran
University Saturday, both games at 6:00 p.m. prior to NWC men's
games at 8:00 p.m.
