SPOKANE, Wash. - Katy Campbell scored 14 points and Kaleigha
Ramey posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 11
rebounds, leading the 14th-ranked George Fox University Bruins to
their record-tying 11th straight win 65-49 over the Whitworth
University Pirates in Northwest Conference women's basketball
action Saturday evening here at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Whitworth jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on baskets by their
top two scorers, Natalie Orrell and Alida Bower, before George Fox
got going. A layup by Ramey, a three-pointer by Jaime Hubka, and
two Melissa Marek-Farris free throws gave the Bruins their first
lead of 8-7, and after trading leads three times more, a Tiffany
Behary three gave the visitors the lead for good at 12-10 with
13:30 left in the half. With Hubka hitting two more treys for nine
first-half points, the Bruins built as much as a 13-point lead
before settling for a 34-25 advantage at the break.
The Bruins were sizzling from the field in the first half,
hitting .600 (12-20), in a place where they have struggled in the
past (George Fox was only 4-9 in Spokane coming to the game). The
Pirates, meanwhile, hit only .345 (10-29).
The Pirates opened the second half with a 9-2 run in the first
five minutes as Bower hit two close baskets and a three-pointer,
cutting the Bruin lead to two points at 36-34, but could never
completely catch up. With only a four-point lead of 46-42 by the
Bruins with just over six minutes remaining, Ramey hit a three and
two free throws and Marek-Farris added a layup and two freebies,
boosting the Bruins to a 13-point 55-42 lead with 3:55 left. The
Pirates got no closer than 12 points thereafter, and a Campbell
layup with 22 seconds to go gave George Fox its largest lead of 18
points at 65-47.
Campbell hit 7-10 from the field to lead all scorers, while
Ramey was 5-9 with a three-pointer and two free throws.
Marek-Farris added 10 points, and that trio combined for 27
rebounds as the Bruins controlled the backboards 35-26. Behary
passed out four assists. The Bruins cooled off in the second half
and ended up right at .500 (23-46) from the field for the game,
including .429 (6-14) from three-point range. They also hit .929
(13-14) from the line.
Bower was the only Pirate in double figures in points with 12,
but Orrell and Liz Horiatis were close with nine each. Tiffany
Corigliano grabbed five rebounds, and Leah Pomonte had three
assists. The Pirates shot .364 (20-55) from the field for the game,
and hit only .273 (3-11) from beyond the arc after entering the
game ninth in the nation with 7.2 threes per game. Whitworth
averages over 20 three-point tries per game, but the Bruins limited
the Pirates to only 11 attempts this time.
George Fox (16-1, NWC 8-0), which won 11 in a row in three
consecutive seasons from 1999-2002, will try for a record 12th
straight win Friday at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma,
Wash., with tipoff set for 6:00 p.m. Whitworth (9-8, NWC 4-4)
remains at home Friday, hosting Willamette University at 6:00 p.m.
Both games will be followed by men's NWC contests at 8:00 p.m.
