LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior center Kristen
Shielee notched a triple-double with 12 points, 21 rebounds, and 10
blocked shots, lifting the George Fox University Bruins to a 64-52
win over the Bridgewater College Eagles on the second day of the
Las Vegas Hoopla women's basketball tournament Saturday
afternoon here at the Centennial Hills Community Center Gym.
George Fox, ranked 23rd nationally by D3hoops.com, was looking to
keep its perfect start to the season going against a Bridgewater
team that had picked up only its second win the day before with a
two-point victory over Occidental College, but it was the Eagles
who took control first. A steal and layup by
Jordan Burkholder with 14:21 to go in the half broke a 7-7 tie and
ignited a 12-0 Bridgewater run that was capped by another
Burkholder basket with 10:49 left, making it a 19-7 game.
Breezy Rinehart-Young's rebound basket for the Bruins with
10:32 left in the period broke the Eagles' run, and the
Bruins gradually fought their way back into the
game. Although Bridgewater maintained its lead
for the rest of the half, a three-point goal by Keisha Gordon with
56 seconds to go made it a two-point game at the break, Bridgewater
leading 30-28.
Gordon hit another three to opening the second-half scoring,
giving George Fox it's first lead of the game at
31-30. The Eagles bounced back to regain a
five-point lead at 42-37 when Kristin Bosserman sank a three with
14:25 left, but the Bruins answered with two free throws by Lindsay
Keener, another three by Gordon, and a Carrie Myers putback to go
up 44-42 with 12:38 to play. Bosserman tied it
for the final time with a bucket at 44-44 with 11:45 to go - and
then the Bruins took off.
Over the next five minutes, the Bruins out-scored the Eagles 13-0,
including threes by Gordon, Arianna Mohsenian, and Sage Indendi,to
take a 57-44 lead with 6:05 to go. Bridgewater
was 0-8 shooting during that span, with Shielee blocking four shots
and grabbing four rebounds. Emileigh Lambert
ended the streak with a jumper to bring the Eagles within 11 at
57-46, but that was as close as they would get.
The Bruins' largest lead was 16 points at 64-48 with 1:46
left on a pair of Myers free throws.
Shielee with 5-6 from the field and 2-2 from the line, had 10
offensive and 11 defensive rebounds, and made seven of her 10
blocks in the second half in posting what is believed to be the
first triple-double in Bruin women's basketball
history. She tied the Bruin record for blocked
shots in a game, also held by Shawna Chandler vs. Western Oregon
University on Jan. 11, 1983. Her rebound total
tied for the third-most in a game in Bruin history with Kristy
Fleming, who had 21 vs. Pacific University on Nov. 24,
1993. The record of 23 rebounds is held jointly
by Debby Wiggers vs. Linfield College (12/8/81) and Tammy Lewis vs.
Western Oregon (2/27/88).
Joining in the points parade for the Bruins were Gordon with a
game-high 16 and Indendi with 12. Myers added 10
rebounds as the Bruins nearly doubled the Eagles on the boards,
57-29. Keener passed out three assists, and
Gordon had three steals.
Bosserman had 13 points to lead the Eagles, while Lambert and
Burkholder chipped in with 11 apiece. Burkholder
also had eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Lacey
Barnett added three assists.
George Fox (8-0) is off until Monday, Dec. 29, when the Bruins
will visit Warner Pacific College for a 7:30 p.m.
tipoff. Bridgewater (2-5) has a break until
Saturday, Jan. 3, when the Eagles will host Randolph College at
