PORTLAND, Ore. - Maintaining a share of the Northwest Conference
lead while posting their 20th win of the season, the George Fox
University Bruins jumped on top of the Pacific University Boxers
early and cruised to a 69-34 win in women's basketball action
Saturday evening here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
In improving to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the conference, the
12th-ranked Bruins kept pace with the University of Puget Sound,
which picked a big road win 64-54 over the Whitworth University
Pirates. Pacific, falling to George Fox for the 10th straight time,
dropped to 3-19 overall and 2-12 in the league.
Baskets by Katy Campbell around a three-pointer by Kaleigha
Ramey got the Bruins off to a quick 7-0 lead before Mallory
Goldammer's layup with 15:45 left in the half put the Boxers on the
board. After trading baskets, the Bruins ran off a string of 13
unanswered points featuring a pair of threes by Mandee Spotts to
make it 22-4 with 11:09 remaining. Shooting .536 (15-28) in the
first half to only .296 (8-27) for the Boxers, the Bruins built up
a 41-16 halftime lead.
The Bruins remained comfortably ahead throughout the second
half, taking a 30-point lead of 52-22 five minutes into the second
half on a three by Jaime Hubka. Their largest lead was 37 points at
69-32 with two minutes left on a jumper by Jordan Westering.
George Fox finished with a .481 shooting percentage (26-54)
while limiting Pacific to .298 (17-57). The Bruins connected on
10-23 from three-point range and held the Boxers, one of the more
prolific long-range teams in the league, to 0-10 from beyond the
arc. The Bruins also kept the Boxers completely off the free throw
line, committing only nine fouls, while making 7-9 of their own
from the stripe.
Thirteen of the 14 Bruins who played scored, Spotts leading all
scorers with 11 while making 3-5 from the field with a pair of
threes and 3-4 from the line. Melissa Marek-Farris and Ramey had 10
each. Ramey also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, leading the
Bruins to a 38-30 margin on the glass. Campbell handed out seven
assists, and Kristen Shielee had three blocked shots.
Kalei Frank and Amy Pedersen led the Boxers with 10 points
apiece, and Frank had a team-high seven rebounds.
George Fox closes out the regular season with two home games
next weekend, first hosting Whitworth Friday at 6:00 p.m. Pacific
hosts Willamette University Friday at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be
followed by NWC men's games at 8:00 p.m.
