NEWBERG, Ore. – Kristen Shielee scored a
career-high 17 points and six different players combined for 11
three-pointers as the unbeaten and 11th-ranked George Fox
University Bruins won their 14th straight, an 80-55 win over the
Pacific University Boxers in Northwest Conference women's
basketball Tuesday evening here at the Wheeler Sports
Center's Miller Gym.
Shielee scored five points on two baskets and a free throw as the
Bruins jumped out to a 10-5 lead five minutes into the
game. The Boxers responded with a 6-0 run,
including a bucket and two free throws by Brittney Anderson, to
take their only lead of th game at 11-10 with 12:29 to go in the
period. Keisha Gordon answered with back-to-back
three-pointers for a 16-11 Bruin advantage, and the home team never
trailed again. With Shielee providing 14
first-half points, the Bruins surged to a 17-point halftime lead of
46-29.
The Boxers closed within 12 points at 48-36 early in the second
half on a layup by Julianne Erbe, but that was as close as the
visitors would get. The Bruins gradually
extended the lead until it reached 25 at 78-53 on a three-pointer
by Laura Silva 34 seconds from the end, and that was also the final
margin as Pilar Mullins hit a pair of free throws with seven
seconds to go for the final score.
Shielee, who hit 7-9 field goals en route to her best scoring
night, also had a team-leading eight rebounds and four blocked
shots. Silva came off the bench to add her own personal high
of 11 points, including 3-3 on three-pointers, and Gordon scored 10
with a pair of threes. Arianna Mohsenian also
canned a trio of treys for nine points. Sage
Indendi passed out five assists and had five of the 11 steals the
Bruins picked up while forcing 24 Pacific
turnovers.
Anderson led all scorers with 19 points for the Boxers, hitting
7-11 from the field, and Rochelle Reeves added
10. Anderson also had eight rebounds, and
Christine Kim handed out six assists.
The Bruins extended their records for best start to a season and
most consecutive wins in climbing to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the
conference. The Boxers fell to 2-10 overall and
1-3 in league play.
George Fox returns to action Saturday, hosting Yamhill County
rival Linfield College at 6:00 p.m. Pacific
heads home to play Willamette University Friday, also at 6:00
p.m. Both games will be followed by NWC
men's games at 8:00 p.m.
