NEWBERG, Ore. – Burying a barrage of
three-pointers, the 11th-ranked George Fox University Bruins built
up a 24-point first-half lead and cruised to their 15th straight
victory 75-49 over the Linfield College Wildcats in a Northwest
Conference women's basketball game Saturday evening here at
the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
The Bruins extended their records for best start to a season and
most consecutive wins in climbing to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the
conference. With Pacific Lutheran University
losing 59-57 at Whitworth College and the University of Puget Sound
edging Whitman College 69-66, the Bruins now have at least a
two-game lead in the loss column on all the other teams in the
conference. The Wildcats fell to 3-12 overall
and 2-4 in league play.
After Linfield had taken brief leads of 2-0 and 4-2 on baskets by
Sarah Amina and Kelsey Forrest, the Bruins tied it 4-4 on a layup
by Keisha Gordon, then went ahead for good 10-4 on threes by B.B.
Gardner and Gordon. Whitney Honn's layup
brought the Wildcats within four at 10-6 with 15:04 left in the
half, but the Bruins ripped off a 22-2 run over the next nine-plus
minutes to take a 32-8 lead with 6:43 to go. The
spurt included threes by Gordon, Arianna Mohsenian, Sage Indendi,
and Elise Kuenzi. George Fox was 7-10 from
three-point range in building up a 36-16 halftime lead.
The Bruins remained comfortably in front throughout the second
half, the Wildcats getting g no closer than 18 points when Nadra
Evans hit a jumper to make it 40-22 with 16:10 left in the
game. The Bruins' largest lead was 30
points on a three-pointer by Danielle Roisom that made it 66-36
with 6:43 to play.
Kuenzi led all scorers with 14 points for the Bruins, sinking 7-8
from the free throw line. Her lone miss, on her
second attempt of the game, ended a string of 31 consecutive free
throws she had made. Gordon and Roisom added 10
points, a career high for the latter, who hit 3-3
three-pointers. Kristen Shielee had a game-high
six rebounds as the Bruins edged the Wildcats on the boards 38-37,
and also blocked five shots. Kuenzi passed out
five assists, and Mohsenian had three steals.
George Fox shot .446 (25-56) from the floor, including 9-16 (.563)
from beyond the arc.
No one scored in double figures for the Wildcats, Forrest
finishing with nine. Forrest and Honn had five
rebounds apiece, while Amina, Evans, and Chrissy Baumgartner handed
out three assists each. Linfield shot .327
(18-55) from the field, struggling from behind the line with a .222
(4-18) mark.
George Fox is on the road next weekend for two games, starting at
Willamette University Friday at 6:00 p.m.
Linfield visits Pacific Lutheran Friday at 6:00
p.m. Both games will be followed by NWC
men's games at 8:00 p.m.
