Box Score THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Meeting for the fourth
time in the space of 20 months, the George Fox University Bruins
continued their women's basketball mastery over the Chapman
University Panthers with a 59-46 neutral-court victory Friday night
here at California Lutheran University's Gilbert Arena.
The Bruins had beaten the Panthers in March of 2007 in the first
round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament, then topped
them twice last season. The first was a home-court win for
the Bruins in mid-December in a regular season game, followed by
another victory in the second round of the national tournament in
Newberg, their 28th win en route to a perfect 32-0 record and the
national championship.
George Fox, ranked 4th in the D3hoops.com pre-season poll and
5th in this week's WBCA poll, improved to 4-0 overall with its 36th
straight win. Chapman fell to 0-4.
After early ties at 2-2 and 4-4, the Bruins broke the game open
with an 8-0 run that featured two layups apiece by Hannah Munger
and Elise Kuenzi and took a 12-4 lead six minutes
into the contest. The Bruins hit a double-digit lead for the
first time at 17-6 on another layin by Munger with 10:21, and took
their largest lead of 21 points at 37-16 on a basket by Breezy
Rinehart-Young with 1:21 left. Kendall Byrer's layup for the
Panthers made it 37-18 Bruins at the half.
George Fox connected on .467 (14-30) from the field in the first
half while holding Chapman to a .269 mark (7-26). Samantha
Simmons came off the bench to lead all scorers with eight for the
Bruins, while Munger and Kuenzi had six apiece. Linda Ly led
the Panthers with five points.
Chapman stepped up its pressure in the second half, forcing 19
George Fox turnovers and limiting the Bruins to a .250 percentage
(7-28) in the final 20 minutes. However, the Panthers could
do little to cut into the gap as the Bruins forced an equal number
of Chapman turnovers and stayed comfortably in front, taking their
largest lead of 24 points with 5:47 to go at 55-31 on a pair of
free shots by Keisha Gordon. Only an 11-1 run by Chapman in
the final three minutes made the score closer.
Kuenzi finished with 12 points and Simmons a career-high 10 to
lead the Bruins. Munger had 10 rebounds and Kuenzi nine as
the Bruins held a 44-31 advantage on the glass, including 19
offensive boards. Gordon passed out three assists and also
had three steals, as did Kuenzi and Arianna Mohsenian.
Simone Ibbotson was the only Panther in double figures with 13
points, while Ly added nine. Casey Gomez led Chapman on the
boards with five rebounds, passed out five assists, and had three
steals.
