McMINNVILLE, Ore. – A sterling defensive effort in
which they held the Linfield College Wildcats to a mere 10 percent
shooting percentage and eight points in the first half sparked the
4th-ranked George Fox University Bruins to a 69-34 rout of their
Yamhill County rivals in a Northwest Conference women's
basketball game Saturday evening here at Ted Wilson Gym.
The Bruins remained one of two undefeated teams left in the NCAA
Division III (No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan is the other) as they climbed
to 23-0. Already the conference champions, they
are 14-0 in league play. The Wildcats fell
deeper into the NWC cellar at 3-20 overall and 2-12 in the league.
Sage Indendi's three-pointer opened the scoring for the
Bruins, and Nadra Evans answered with a jumper for the
Wildcats. The Bruins then reeled off 19
unanswered points to take a 22-2 lead with 12:25 left, and closed
with a 12-0 run over the final seven minutes of the period to lead
41-8 at the half.
Linfield was only 3-30 (.100) from the field and 0-11 from
three-point range in the first half, while George Fox connected on
17-35 (.486) and 4-10 (.400) from behind the
arc. Keisha Gorden out-scored the Wildcats all
by herself with 10 in the half.
The Wildcats improved significantly in the second half, hitting
10-31 (.323) to finish with a mark of .213 (13-61), but got no
closer than 32 points when Sarah Amina hit a three to make it 47-15
with 16:28 left. The Bruins' largest lead
of the game was 40 points on a layup by B.B. Gardner that made it
58-18 with 13:28 to play.
Kristen Shielee led all scorers with 16 points for the Bruins,
making 8-10 from the floor. She also had three
blocked shots, extending her single-season record to
91. Gordon added 13 on 5-8 shooting, including
3-4 on threes. Elise Kuenzi had 10 rebounds as
the Bruins controlled the boards 47-34. Indendi
passed out six assists. George Fox shot .475
(28-59) from the field for the game.
Lindsey Gummersall was the only
Wildcat in double figures with 11 points.
Chrissy Baumgartner had a team-high seven rebounds.
George Fox closes out the regular season with two home games next
weekend, starting with Willamette University on Friday at 6:00
p.m. Linfield hosts Pacific Lutheran University
Friday. Both games begin at 6 p.m., followed by
men's NWC games at 8 p.m.
