PORTLAND, Ore. - Kirsten
Cardwell broke a tie in the second overtime period with her second
goal of the game, lifting the George Fox University Bruins to a 3-2
win over the Warner Pacific College Knights in a non-conference
women's soccer match Thursday night here at Portland Christian
School's Meyer/Beck Field.
The game was originally scheduled as the Bruins' season opener
at home on Aug. 29, but had been postponed twice due to various
conflicts by both schools. Once they finally got going, the
visiting Bruins struck first thanks to Cardwell's first tally of
the night at the 8:14 mark. Jenny McKinsey gave her a nice feed
that Cardwell finished left and low for her second score of the
season. It was the McKinsey's third assist of the season and
the 18th of her career, tying Karli Holub's Bruin career record set
from 1998-2000.
McKinsey added a goal eight minutes later off a corner kick
opportunity from Esther Harder, beating goalkeeper Lacey Golden to
the far post for her third goal of the season. The Knights
countered with two quick goals later in the period, Elissa Coutin
scoring the first one from point blank range at 38:09 off a
Danielle Rodriguez corner kick. A mere 45 seconds later,
Rodriguez streaked through the middle after a Coutin long pass and
slotted a shot past Bruin keeper Autumn Van Meter to tie the game.
Though each team managed several dangerous corner kicks
throughout the second half and the first overtime, neither team was
able to punch home a winner. Finally, 3:32 into the second
overtime, Cardwell finished off a well-executed counter attack
following a pass from Harder for her third goal of the year, giving
the Bruins the 3-2 win.
George Fox registered 13 shots compared to 10 for Warner
Pacific, although Warner had more shots on goal, 9-8. The
Bruins achieved 10 corner kicks to six for the Knights. Van
Meter had seven saves in earning the win for the Bruins, while
Lacey Golden saved five but took the loss for the Knights.
George Fox (2-0) goes to Northwest University in Kirkland,
Wash., Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest. Warner Pacific
(0-4-10) hosts Linfield College Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
