Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Tying the record for team
blocks in a game while falling one shy of the marks for individual
blocks and team three-point field goals, the George Fox University
Bruins cruised to an 83-49 win over the Linfield College Wildcats
in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game Saturday night
here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
It was the ninth straight win for the Bruins, ranked 7th in the
WBCA national poll and 10th in the D3hoops.com poll, and improved
their record to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
George Fox and Lewis & Clark College are tied atop the NWC
standings and meet Friday in Portland for a first-place
showdown. Linfield dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the
league.
Highlighting the Bruins' evening were 13 blocked shots, tying
the standard set last year on Nov. 22, 2008, at the University of
Dallas. Freshman center Hannah Munger had
nine of the blocks, while Elise Kuenzi, Keisha Gordon, MJ Samples,
and Carrie Myers had one each. Munger's nine blocks were one
off the individual record of 10 set by Shawna Chandler vs. Western
Oregon on Jan. 11, 1983, and tied last year by Kristen Shielee vs.
Bridgwater on Dec. 19, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Bruins connected on 15 three-pointers in the game, one short
of the 16 made vs. Lewis & Clark on Feb. 8, 2000, and tied vs.
Western Oregon on Dec. 9, 2005. Arianna Mohsenian made the
15th one with 9:27 left in the game, but the Bruins missed their
final six attempts to equal the record.
George Fox never trailed after Gordon drained a three to open
the scoring two minutes into the contest. Kelsey Forrest's
layup for Linfield made it 3-2, but Mohsenian hit a three, Kuenzi
made a free throw and hit a three to make it 10-2, and the Bruins
were off to the races. Eight of the Bruins' first 10 field
goals were from behind the arc as they built a 29-6 lead with just
under seven minutes left in the half, and a trey by B.B. Gardner
with two ticks left on the clock made it a 42-18 count at the
break.
Kuenzi's 10 points led the Bruins in the first half, while
Forrest's nine were half of the Wildcats' points. George Fox
shot .536 (15-28) in the period while Linfield struggled to a .207
mark (6-29).
The Bruins continued to extend the lead in the second half,
hitting the 30-point margin with 13:24 left on a three by Gardner
that made it 56-26. The lead was no less than that the rest
of the game, with the Bruins' largest margin at 39 with 1:05 left
when a pair of Katie Morse free throws made it 83-44.
Four Bruins scored in double figures, with 12 apiece by Gordon
and Mohsenian and 10 by Kuenzi and Samantha Simmons. The
Bruin bench contributed 47 points in the game. Munger had a
team-high nine rebounds, Mohsenian handed out five assists, and
Gardner made five steals. George Fox shot .476 (30-63) for
the game and .517 (15-29) from downtown.
Lindsey Gummersall and Forrest each had double-doubles for the
Wildcats, Gummersall with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Forrest
with 14 and 11. Linfield owned the boards 46-40, including 23
on the offensive end. Gretchen Owens passed out five
assists. The Wildcats finished with a .266 shooting
percentage (17-64) and were only 2-15 from three-point range.
