Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - A balanced scoring attack and a
clear advantage in the post allowed the George Fox University
Bruins to distance themselves from the Pacific University Boxers en
route to Monday's 67-46 Northwest Conference women's basketball win
here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
Three players scored in double figures and two more had nine and
eight for the Bruins, who outscored the Boxers 34-8 down low.
George Fox came into the game ranked 12th in the WBCA's NCAA
Division III poll and 16th in D3hoops.com poll as they improved to
9-2 overall and 2-0 in NWC play. The Bruins extended their regular
season conference winning streak to 21-0, dating back to last
year's 32-0 national championship season and the last three NWC
games of the '07-08 season.
The Bruins, who held Pacific to .286 percent shooting in the
first half, built an 8-0 lead two minutes into the game, capped by
four consecutive points from Keisha Gordon, who
finished with 14 to lead George Fox. The Bruins would never
relinquish the lead the entire game.
Pacific's Julianne Erbe and Erica Shultz hit back-to-back
jumpers to narrow the gap to 8-5, before a layup by B.B. Gardner at
16:08 and another layup by the senior guard at 11:35 started and
ended an 11-point burst. Gardner added a three-pointer, Gordon hit
two free throws, and Hannah Munger scored two points during that
span.
Two Munger shots and a three by Arianna Mohsenian built the
biggest lead of the half with eight minutes left at 26-7. The
Boxers countered with a run of their own, bringing the score to
26-20 as the home team went cold, shooting 0-5 during the
two-minute stretch. Rochelle Reeves-Howe scored eleven points alone
during the 13-0 spurt, including two threes and a layup in
succession.
That would be the closest Pacific would get the entire game as
Mohsenian hit a jumper and Gardner completed a momentum-building
conventional three-point play to set up a three by Gordon to get
the lead up to 14. Reeves-Howe added two more points before Munger
made a layup off a Laura Silva assist with under a minute left for
the 38-22 half-time score. Silva finished with a game-high four
assists.
Even though the home team cooled off in the second half,
shooting .407 percent rather than their .500 first-half
performance, the score progressed from bad to worse for the Boxers
as they saw the Bruins pull ahead by 22 seven minutes into the half
and then to 28 at the 7:41 mark.
A layup-and-one by Gordon at 17:52 got George Fox rolling and
five consecutive points by Lindsey Keener off a driving lay-in and
a corner three ball gave the Bruins a 22-point advantage. Gordon
added two more, but Reeves-Howe came back with a jumper of her own
at the 12:58 mark. The score fluctuated back and forth before
Mohsenian and Breezy Rinehart-Young combined for 10 points over the
next seven minutes to balloon the lead to 59-31.
Pacific chiseled the lead down to 20 behind six Erbe points, a
Reeves-Howe layup, and a Kandice McArthur jumper, but two free
throws my MJ Samples and two more by Rinehart-Young gave the Bruins
a 65-43 advantage. With the game all but decided, Samples drained a
jumper with 1:18 left before McArthur hit a consolation three with
11 second left for the final score.
In addition to Gordon's 14, Munger had 12 and Gardner 10 for the
Bruins, who shot .456 (26-57) for the game. Mohsenian had a
season-high nine points and Rinehart-Young added eight. Gordon also
had a team-leading seven rebounds, followed by Munger and
Rinehart-Young, who pulled down six apiece.
The Bruins forced the visitors into 16 turnovers, eight off of
steals. Rinehart-Young led with three and Gardner and Mohsenian
finished with two each.
Reeves-Howe finished with a game-high 19 points and also pulled
down five boards for Pacific, which fell to 4-5 overall and 1-1
NWC. Erbe was the only other Boxer in double figures, finishing
with 12 points and 11 rebounds to complete a double-double.
