NEWBERG, Ore. - For the second game in a row,
the George Fox University Bruins battled their women's soccer
opponent to a scoreless deadlock, this time against the visiting
Warner Pacific College Knights in double overtime in a
non-conference clash Saturday night here at the Austin Sports
Complex.
In the first women's game ever played at the brand-new facility
on Thursday, George Fox and Northwest University went 90 minutes
without either team scoring, but did not play any overtimes.
Coupled with the Bruins' men's game on Thursday, a 3-0 loss to
Oregon Tech, the home teams are still seeking their first goal at
the ASC.
After a relatively-even first half in which Warner Pacific
out-shot George Fox 7-5, the Bruins dominated possession the rest
of the way but could never punch across that one goal they
needed. The best chance for either team to score came on a
penalty kick by the Bruins' Melanie Gaither in the
first minute of the second half, but Warner Pacific goalkeeper
Nikita Rivera made the right move to stop the shot and preserve the
scoreless tie.
The Bruins out-shot the Knights 12-1 in the second half and 5-1
in the two overtime periods, held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal,
and took six corner kicks to four for the visitors. Gaither
led the Bruins with five shots and Brittany Johnson had four for
the Knights.
Rivera posted nine saves in goal for Warner Pacific.
George Fox starting keeper Becka Doyle stopped three shots in the
first half, and sub goalie Alyssa Montero made two saves total in
the second half and the two overtimes.
