Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. --- It was a magical day Saturday afternoon, as the Bruins hosted cross-town rival Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference showdown. The Bruins defeated the Pioneers, 49-35, to continue a 3-game home win streak and set a program record for most points scored in a game.
Recap:
The Bruins wasted no time in the opening minutes, using just two minutes and nine seconds off the game clock before their first touchdown was on the board. Grant Schroeder threw a gorgeous pass to Brad Lander for the 5-yard touchdown pass. The Bruins were able to get the ball back again late in the first quarter, and used it to their advantage as Lenana Meekisho forced his way into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run. George Fox continued to pour it on the Pioneers, as Schroeder again used his arm for the score, finding Trevor Daniels for a 41-yard touchdown pass. The Bruins were persistent, marching into the end zone two more times, as Meekisho recorded his second and third touchdown of the game.
The Pioneers wouldn't let the Bruins keep them scoreless going into the half, as Pioneer' quarterback Niko Fortino found Daniel Dennis for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The Bruins went into the half up, 35-7.
During the second half the Pioneers started to chip away at the score with a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Bruins responded as John Shaffer dashed his way into the end zone for a 1-yard run. Lewis & Clark managed to score two more times, bringing the score to 42-28, but the dagger came from Schroeder again as he found Tony Long for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Top Performers:
Schroeder threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 14 of his 20 passes. Shaffer led the ground attack with 82 yards and a touchdown, while Meekisho was the real hero of the night recording three touchdowns. Lander led the receiving core with 82 yards. Jesse Bresser led the defense with nine total tackles and one sack, while Ryan Russo was right behind him with eight tackles.
What It Means:
The Bruins have now won their last three home games, and improve to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the NWC. George Fox joins Whitworth as the only two teams in conference to record three straight wins at home.
